Abstract
Special education teachers who are teaching children with special needs in
the learning disability category (SETLD) face various issues that affect their
psychological well-being such as stress, compassion fatigue and burnout in their
work. Less emphasis placed on psychological well-being has led to a negative impact
on SETLD. Hence, this study aims to develop a psychological well-being model that
is based on self-compassion, social support and spiritual well-being in the context of
SETLD. These teachers are in the Malaysian Northern Zone Special Education
Integration Programme. This study was carried out on 322 SETLDs in Penang,
Kedah and Perlis. Multi-level sampling technique was used and implemented via
rated random strata sampling technique and simple group random sampling
technique. This study used quantitative approach through survey based on crosssectional
design and involved four instruments namely Self-compassion, Social
Support Network, Spiritual Well-being and Psychological Well-Being
questionnaires. Systematic analysis method was used in determining the validity and
reliability of the questionnaire. Research data analysis used descriptive and
inferential analyses. With the help of the SPSS software, descriptive analysis was
done to study the profile of every variable via min score and frequency response
pattern. Inferential analysis using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation
Modeling (PLS-SEM) with the help of the Smart PLS 3.0 software was done to study the variables as a predictor, mediator and variable factor that contributed the most to
psychological well-being. Study results found that self-compassion, social support
and spiritual well-being had significant relationship and are predictors of
psychological well-being. Other than that, this study showed that social support and
spiritual well-being had significant relationship and predictors of self-compassion.
Furthermore, self-compassion is the mediator in the relationship between social
support and spiritual well-being for psychological well-being. Self-compassion is
also the main contributor to SETLD’s psychological well-being. Implications of this
study showed that the model that was formed effectively reflect the psychological
well-being phenomenon of SETLDs based on self-compassion, social support and
spiritual well-being. It is hoped that this model can contribute meaningfully to the
development of knowledge in the field of Special Education especially in teaching
professionalism, specifically in the effort to enhance Malaysian SETLDs’
psychological well-being.
