T ONE of the thesis sets out to examme the historical background and literary contribution of the author of Tiij al-' Arli s al-ll7iwi Li Tahdh[b al- Nufiis ("The Crown of the Bride in Cleansing the Soul") as well as that of its translator. Attention is also focussed on the development of mystical teachings in and around the Pontianak/Banjarmasin environment in Kalimantan, as well as on Shadhiliyyah influence upon Malay religious scholars in Makkah al-Mukarramah towards the end of the 19th century. This dissertation then proceeds with an indepth study of the book particularly tpe ~entral themes foun~ therein, namely, (a) repentance (b) tadhkryyah al-nafs or cleansing of the soul (including the role of the heart and the soul) and (c) dhikr Allah or remembrance of Allah, ·a hallmark of sufism. All these are examined concomitant with the esoteric perspective of Quranic hermeneutics. It is obvious that such an ·approach would unlock the secrets implicit in such writings which include purifying the soul by means of educating and training the self, facts inherent in the three central themes mentioned above. As such we can conclude that mystical scholarship with its inner strength and beauty are means by which to arrive at the core of Islamic teachings. Analysis of this section then moves towards the main thrust of the study i.e the literary qualities of Tiij al-' Arus including its rhetoric, its explicitand more particularly - implicit features, characteristics and elements that exalt it as a piece of literature of religious dimensions. PART TWO of the thesis deals with the transliteration of the text from its Jawi to Romanised script undertaken in tandem with the customary editing and annotating of the text. It is an accepted norm that such an exercise should (a) render the entire text more easily readable; (b) facilitate an easier understanding of the content; and (c) present an effective overall organisation of the text. Annotating and editing are necessary ingredients in the transliteration of an important mystical work like Tiij al-' Arus and as such they are given due emphasis. All the verses of the Holy Quran, the Ahadith or Traditions and aphorisms are duly identified and their sources, exegesis and elucidation provided. All these are appended at the end of each chapter. The result of such a study necessarily reveals how Malay religious scholars in the 19th century through their writings like Tiij al-' Arus are successful in conveying and transferring Shadhiliyyah mystical thought with its latent inner richness of a very high order, thereby contributing to the development and enrichment of Malay literature in the Nusantara.en_US
