Abstract
The main aim of this study was to investigate the transformational leadership, school culture and organizational health that is being practiced at secondary schools in the Northern States of Peninsular Malaysia and also the moderating influence of school culture on the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational health of secondary schools as perceived by teachers. Specifically, this study described (1) the level of transformational leadership that is being practiced at secondary schools, (2) the level of school culture that is being practiced at secondary schools, (3) the level of organizational health that is being practiced at secondary schools, (4) the influence of transformational leadership on school culture of secondary schools, (5) the influence of transformational leadership on organizational health of secondary schools, (6) the influence of school culture on organizational health of secondary schools, (7) the best predictor among transformational leadership and school culture on organizational health of secondary schools and (8) the moderating influence of school culture on the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational health of secondary schools. A total of 689 teachers were randomly selected from 152 national secondary schools from three states; Pulau Pinang, Kedah Darul Aman and Perlis Indera Kayangan representing the Northern States of Peninsular Malaysia as research samples. Research data was collected from respondents by using a set of structured questionnaire consisting of four sections. Questionnaire from Leithwood and Jantzi (1996) was used to measure transformational leadership, questionnaire from Hoy and Tarter (1991) was used to measure the health of the secondary schools and questionnaire from Gruenert and Valentine (1998) was used to measure school culture. The collected data was analyzed by using SPSS version 20.0. The hypotheses were tested using descriptive analysis, multiple regression analysis and moderated multiple regression analysis. Research findings showed that all of transformational leadership dimensions have a positive and significant relationship with school culture dimensions. Research findings also showed that transformational leadership dimensions have a positive and significant relationship with organizational health dimensions. There is also evidence to show that school culture dimension have positive and significant relationship with organizational health dimensions. Furthermore, research findings showed that school culture was able to act as a moderator of the relationship between principal’s transformational leadership with organizational health of secondary schools.
