dc.description.abstract | This study analyses humour in a Japanese comic book series entitled Crayon Shin Chan and its Malay translation, Dik Cerdas. The study focused on humorous elements which can be found in the source text and target text. It is carried out with the following objectives: to analyse humorous elements found in the comic book, to identify methods used to translate these humorous elements, and to examine the translation effect resulting from the use of these translation methods. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks provided by Attardo and Raskin (1991), López (2002), and Veatch (1998), which focused on the formation of humour, semantic frames found in humorous incidents and the element of absurdity in humorous situations, this study analysed the elements of humour from a linguistic point of view and features that make up humour, and examined how these elements affect the production of humour and its translation. Newmark’s (1988) translation approaches and Celotti’s (2008) translation methods and semiotic elements (linguistic paratexts) were used to analyse the translation of humour in the Malay target text. The findings showed that the humorous elements in the comic book used in the study exist in three ways: a) in verbal form, b) in visual form, or, c) the combination of humour in the form of verbal and visual elements. These three types of humour influenced the translation approaches employed to transfer elements of humour from Japanese into Malay. The analysis also showed that humour containing cultural elements in visual form were adapted into the target culture in the target text. Some elements of humour were not able to be successfully transferred into target text, due to the language barrier or the existence of cultural values in the source culture which do not exist in the target culture or which are considered taboo. The text, therefore, can be said to have been adapted to be more child-friendly in the target culture. | en_US |
