Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of a combination ofpresential and webbased
modes of instruction. In addition, this study also examined the influence of
psychological traits such as computer anxiety, and its effects on the sample population
in this new learning environment.
The sample of this study consists 116 Muslim students undergoing a course in
Islamic studies in a priv~te university in Malaysia. This ex-post facto research was
conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Two groupsĀ· were identified from.the sample population namely one that was
found to prefer presential instruction and the other, both presential and Web-based
Instruction. Comparison of effectiveness on these two learning styles is based upon;
(a) quantitative analysis of course grades ofthe final semester examination, and (b)
qualitative analysis which includes interviews and course web site analysis. The
Computer Anxiety and Apathy Scale (CAAS) was used to determine psychological
traits of the samples.
No significant difference was found between both groups in academic
achievement. Qualitative analysis suggests that this insignificance is due to poor WBI
design. The study also ascertain that the aspect of psychological traits, as measured
by CAAS, does not effect the sample population's academic achievement in a
learning environment that encourages computer use.
