| dc.description.abstract | The pathogen which cause the Fusarium wilt disease on bananas (Musa sp.) was isolated from several sites in Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang. The isolate was identified as Fusarium oxysporum fsp. cubense and its virulence was confirmed. Endophytic avirulent F oxysporum and bacteria were isolated from root tissues or rhizosphere soil of wild banana plants from several localities in Pulau Pinang, Kedah, Perak and Kuala Lumpur. The effectiveness of these microorganisms in eliciting cross protection in banana plantlet ho~ts against challenge inoculati.ons by the F oxysporum f sp. cubense pathogen were studied using the double cup pathogenicity test technique. Sixteen Fusarium oxysporum isolates were obtained from the roots of wild banana plants. Fourteen isolates were found to be endophytic while three isolates example F02, F03 and FOIl which gave the best protection against Fusarium wilt were selected for further investigations of their effectiveness. For the endophytic bacteria that were isolated from rhizosphere soils, 260 isolates were successfully cultured. Finally, only 14 isolates were found to produce consistent mycelial growth inhibition and their effectiveness were studied in challenge incubations. B7 (Bacillus sp.) was the only isolate to successfully showed disease symptom reduction. Test of synergistic action between avirulent fungi and endophytic bacteria gave poorer results when compared to the use of avirulent fungi only.
