Abstract
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a relatively new concept in
Malaysia. Most companies from industrialized countries like Japan, Europe and US have
adopted TPM with relatively successful re..sults in manufacturing performance. The
objective of this research is to study if the extent of TPM implementation have an impact
on performance. Two of the dimensions of the extent of TPM implementation were
identified as Autonomous Maintenance and Planned Maintenance. The dependent
variable is the performance of the company where quality , productivity and flexibility
are measured. The research model includ.e s three moderating variables , type of process
type of equipment and equipment age.
The study was conducted on vanous manufacturing industries, mostly from
Penang. The rest was taken from industries in East Coast and Klang Valley. The scope of
the study covers both multinational and local companies.
The results revealed that of all the dimensions of the extent of TPM
implementation, general inspection has the most significant impact on the organizational
performance. Furthermore , type of equipment does influence the relationship; it is a
significant moderator to the performance of the company.
The implication is that the managers, specifically those directly involved with the
production floor, should consider general inspection and the type of equipment before
implementing TPM to ensure that whatever objectives set are achieved.
