Abstract
The focus of this research is to study the effects of concept mapping in
Web-based learning environment. The website that is specially designed for this
study is based on the Interpretation Construction Design Model by Black &
McClintock (1995).
The sample for this research consisted of 189 students enrolled in the
ZCT 104 - Physics Modern course offered by the School of Physics, Universiti
Sains Malaysia during the 2003/2004 academic session. The study involved
comparing between the treatment web page, which is integrated with concept
mapping with the control web page, designed without concept mapping in the
course delivery.
The result of the comparative study showed no significant difference
(p>0.05) on the pre-formative (pre-formativee vs pre-formativec) and pre test
(pre teste vs pre teste) mean scores but showed significant difference (p<0.05)
on the post-formative (post-formativee vs post-formativec) and post test (post
teste vs post teste) mean scores. The result on students' perception for the
teaching and learning (T&L) processes in the dimension of learning
component, interaction between students and the effectiveness/assessment of
the treatment indicated significant (p<0.05) with favorable responses towards
the treatment with concept mapping.
The favorable findings toward the treatment with concept mapping were
supported by positive responses obtatned from the student in open-ended
analysis in terms of learning outcomes. suitability and strength
