Abstract
This study aims to identify the level of feedback environment, coaching
communication, trust towards leaders, and self-efficacy of teaching at polytechnics.
In particular, this study aims to identify the potential of the variable of trust towards
leader as moderator on the relationship between feedback environment and coaching
communication. Furthermore, the study also aims to identify the influence of
coaching communication variable as mediator on the relationship between feedback
environment and self-efficacy of teaching. A total of 411 lecturers from five
polytechnics, which have gained high achievement through recognition of the
polytechnic (Polyrate) including the academic standards and the quality of the
polytechnic management participated as the samples in this study. The questionnaire
which consists of five sections was used to obtain the data from the respondents.
Translated questionnaire from Steelman, Levy, and Snell (2004), Heslin,
VandeWalle, and Latham (2006), McAllister (1995), and Tschannen-Moran and Hoy
(2001) was used in this study. The questionnaire consists of 56 items. Each section in
the questionnaire has high reliability with Alpha Cronbach values as high as .93 and
above. All data for these quantitative studies were obtained using the analysis units
of individual. All data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and
hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The findings showed that the practice of
feedback environment, coaching communication, trust towards leaders, and teaching
self-efficacy are at moderate and higher level. Accordingly, the study showed that
the coaching communication variable acts as mediator variable on the relationship
between feedback environment and teaching self-efficacy. The study also found that
the variable of trust towards leaders as moderator variable on the relationship
between feedback environment and coaching communication. The results of this
study suggested several implications for the Department of Polytechnic Education
and the Ministry of Higher Education to enhance the measures in improving selfefficacy
of teaching including strengthening the role of the middle leaders in
polytechnics.
