| dc.description.abstract | This study is a thorough investigation on the intellectual history in Malaysia with special reference to Islamic thought in the Peninsular within 1900-1980's. The research adopts a synthetical, as opposed to its dichotomical approach. As such, it allows the observation of the continuity amidst the various changes. The history of Islamic thought, in reality, has seen the rise of various trends due to internal and external factors. This investigation, however, concentrates on three major trbnds that can be regarded to represent the various current trends. They are traditionalism, modernism, and reformism. The first of the three trends, traditionalism is in fact a continuity of a )ine of thought that has dominated the Malay Archipelago for a long time. Tile main concern was basically on religious matters encompassing theology, law, and sufism. B.!.Jt the changing in time has resulted in some of its adherents to actively participate in secular issues, while retaining the bases of traditionalists thought. With regard to the second major trend, modernism, as a Western heritage, it manifests itself in the traditional form which deals with theological issues, and more importantly, in a new image that discusses ·secular affairs. Reformism, the last major trend, originates from the Salaf tradition which concerns more on religious issues. However, the trer.d has observed the birth of new reformist wing that tend to emphasize more on secular affairs, either radically or intellectually. Even though there are several trends and diversity in Islamic thought in Malaysia, yet in certain aspects there exists a kind of unity and integration among the Muslim themselves. ... | en_US |
