| dc.description.abstract | Television plays an important role in the dissemination of political information. Political information is related to the reporting of organizational and legal struggles to gain power in society through the mass media and this includes speeches conveyed by- political actor, reports on competition for the certain post in political organization and stories on election. With the current political turmoil in Malaysia, this study will find out the rural Kelantanese audience's opinion regarding political information which is disseminated through television news. This study which is conducted in Kelantan is interesting because the state is governed by an opposition political power whereas television broadcast is transmitted directly from Kuala Lumpur and controlled by a centralized ruling government that has a different political orientation. Meanwhile, the state has no proper means of broadcast media to disseminate its current political information to the domestic audience. This study also surveyed the audience reception to discover their evaluation towards the political information aired by television news in two different rural areas which are measured by their _distance from the nearest town. This study uses survey questionnaire and focus groups interview methods. This study discovered that ( l) the Kelantanese rural audiences are not so confident about and not very dependent on television news as a source of political information. In fact, they dispute the credibility of source and content reporting about certain domestic political issues which they perceived as unclear, biased and contrary to the real situation. Meanwhile, (2) the influence of alternative information has increased and has affected the audience's perception towards reading mainstream political information. The audience's dissatisfaction over mainstream information led them to shift to alternative information. At the same time, (3) although there are many types of mass media, political speeches are still popular as a source of political information among rural audiences in Kelantan. This good reception is strongly related to the popularity of certain speaker and the failure of other media to give adequate explanation over certain issues. If the imbalanced, unclear and incorrect news reports are allowed to carry on, television will likely lose its appeal and credibility. | en_US |
