This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) through web page on students' performance and perception at university level. The IBL is one of the learning approaches incorporating the characteristics of constructivism. The IBL design used in the study was based on the Suchman Inquiry Model. Learning Management System, LMS was used as a platform for online delivery. A total 136 students enrolled in ZCT 1 04 -Modern Physics, 2005/2006 academic session offered by the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia was chosen to be the sample for this study. The study involved comparing two different online learning approaches; the experimental versus the control. The experimental approach was designed according to the IBL and the control approach was designed according the Content Based Learning (CBL). The design of this study was based on the quasi-experimental as suggested by Mouly (1963). The result of this study in terms of performances as measured through the posttest revealed that IBL treatment gives a higher mean value than the CBL treatment with significant difference. It should be noted that this result was achieved based on immediate recall of the subject contents. For the students' perception towards the knowledge enhancement as measured through post-formative questionnaire, the result showed that mean value for IBL is higher than CBL but with no significant difference. In the teaching and learning (T&L) process, five dimensions were investigated. They were the introduction, instruction, learning material, learning delivery and learning effectiveness. All the dimensions give higher mean values for the IBL compared with the CBL with significant difference. As a result from student opinions, most students give positive responses for this IBL treatment. Also for the summative questionnaire, the results recorded that the IBL treatment was accepted by the students as a new way of learning that can improve their learning performance. The findings of this study agree with the findings of Mattheis & Nakayama ( 1998) and Schneider & Renner (1980). In both studies the IBL was found effective in enhancing the students' conceptual understanding and also improve their learning performance.en_US
