dc.description.abstractThe increasing significance of social communication technologies (SCTs) usage within an organization has become new information processing and resulting in business process transitions. By applying media richness theory, this research investigated how social communication technologies can be used by an employee to fit the task characteristics with the media characteristics deliberation. Seven media selected which were telephone, email, blog, video conferencing, instant messenger, intranet portal and social network sites to be measured under several criteria. The six criteria for medium included availability comfort level, secure, feedback, amount of information and media cues. In this study, 189 respondents were collected from the employees who were involved in various industries and departments. The data collected from the survey were analyzed using Smart PLS to test the hypotheses. The result revealed that task characteristics and media characteristics were related to the use of social communication technologies, and these media usage resulted in positive task performance. The performance of a few specific technologies demonstrated binding effects such as the email performance was associated with instant messenger performance. This study provided the insights on media selection by considering the media characteristics and task characteristics in order to improve task performance in organizations. The employee can handle the task efficiently and effectively by integrating the existing media with new media. In terms of practical contributions, the employees can refer to the guidelines in selecting the most appropriate SCTs in the workplace.en_US
