| dc.description.abstract | Sustainable tourism has long been introduced to the tourism sector and it evolves from sustainable development starting from conventional mass tourism to the sustainable tourism that is widely known today. The awareness of environmental importance was being brought up by a series of important events and later influences the definition of sustainable tourism. Researchers regard the phenomenon as paradigm shift towards green paradigm and eventually formed the alternative tourism. Different terminologies of alternative tourism involves various approaches; environmental approach, value-based approach and specific products as marketing strategies. The value based approach later develops into the concept of responsible tourism with the influence from the major event including Cape Town Declaration and the Global Code of Ethics. The shift from dominant western environmental paradigm to green paradigm had influence the characteristic of the tourists and therefore promotes the emergence of ne~ tourist which evolves into responsible tourists. This research seeks to develop understanding of Responsible Tourism concept as there is lack of such research being documented in Malaysia. It will also explore the guidelines proposed by different individuals and organization, examine the consumers' behavior while traveling and their perceptions of Responsible Tourism criteria. Results ofT-Tests show that the population samples are responsible tourists regardless of the gender and nationality meanwhile the mean score for the perception of environment responsibilities are the highest compare to social responsibilities and economic responsibilities suggesting that Malaysians are more environmentally aware.
