Botany And Metaphor

I started the doctorate program with works depicting fictional plants as a mirror or metaphor for my thoughts and feelings. The plants in the watercolour works on paper are impossible biologically and in terms of the environments in which I place them. In connection with these artworks I looked at the work of Charles Avery and Marcel Boodthaers, who both put their artwork in a fictional frame of an invented island and an imaginary museum using different methods and media. Charles Avery exhibits drawings, sculpture and text to realize his imaginary island, while Broodthaers uses readymade objects to create his fictional museum. I wanted the plants I make to have the quality that, although they are fiction, they can possibly exist in the mind of the viewer.

Past literature had shown many cases of abused and manipulated halal logo which affects the knowledge and understanding of the consumers, that introduced to minimise doubtful transactions and confusion for Muslim consumers. This indicates an immediate study to understand the behaviour and responses of Muslim consumers towards JAKIM halal logo by focusing on their levels of halal related knowledge, awareness and confidence in their daily consumption and routines. The study explores a mixed method of phenomenology model (1994) with thematic analysis (2006) in analysing the verbatim data.

This thesis studies about Lapohan pottery which is a traditional pottery of early prehistoric technology that has existed for 3000 years ago in Gua Tengkorak, Semporna. The research problem is focused on studying the level of ability of clay in Pulau Selakan to produce Lapohan to overcome the problem of cracking during the pottery making process.

This research examines the continued presence of elements and derivatives from the Ramayana epic that are still prevalent in Malaysian visual arts despite the introduction of the NCP. Using New Art History as a conceptual framework, this research examines and analyses selected local artworks that have been produced by artists since independence (1957) to this day across various mediums through the lens of wayang kulit.
Kajian Terhadap Kostum Persembahan Teater Tradisional Boria Di Pulau Pinang

Boria ialah sebuah teater tradisional yang dibawa masuk ke Pulau Pinang sejak awal abad ke-19. Pada awal kemunculannya, boria mempunyai perkaitan dengan peristiwa di Karbala yang mempunyai kefahaman Syiah. Terdapat lima elemen dalam boria iaitu sketsa bagi segmen pertama dan nyanyian, tarian, muzik serta kostum bagi segmen kedua. Pelbagai perubahan yang telah berlaku sehingga abad ke-21 antaranya elemen kostum. Kajian ini akan melihat tentang kostum yang diguna pakai dalam persembahan boria awal abad ke-19 hingga abad ke-21. Kostum boria mengalami perubahan besar yang selari dengan arus pembangunan moden dan peredaran zaman apabila boria diubah suai mengikut cita rasa dan budaya komuniti tempatan.
Sistem Notasi Tari Rakyat Melayu Di Semenanjung Malaysia: Kajian Kes Yayasan Warisan Johor Dan Jabatan Kebudayaan & Kesenian Negara

This thesis focuses on the development and the exercise of dance notation systems for Malay folk dance through the case studies of Yayasan Warisan Johor and the Jabatan Kebudayaan & Kesenian Negara. In the local dance studies, the literature related to dance notation is inadequate and this causes limitations on the understanding of the roles and functions of dance notation in promoting Malay folk dance. Through qualitative methodologies such as ethnography and movement structural analysis, this thesis identifies the various existing notation systems in peninsular Malaysia; and explains the importance of dance notation in conveying the structure and form of Malay folk dance. This thesis shows that notation systems created by YWJ and JKKN are the deliberate and flexible process in which the founders select and integrate various notation methods such as descriptions, illustrations and adaptations from Labanotation in order to record and preserve the repertoires of zapin and tarian gubahan baharu from InspiTari. This thesis suggests that the notation systems combining symbols and terminology is the most appropriate for transcribing Malay folk dance.

Penciptaan produk kraf kesenian Melayu yang dihasilkan daripada tanah liat mempunyai keindahan yang mendalam dari segi reka bentuk dan ragam hias. Kefahaman tentang makna yang tersirat semakin menghilang akibat daripada faktor-faktor keterbatasan pengetahuan tentang estetika Terenang. Kajian Terenang ini perlu bagi mendokumentasikan motif-motif dan reka bentuk yang terdapat pada Terenang. Tembikar Terenang yang berasal daripada Kampung Pasir Durian, Kuala Tembeling, Jerantut Pahang ini merupakan tembikar warisan yang mempunyai bentuk dan motif yang telah mempamerkan serta memperjelaskan tentang kemahiran dan kebijaksanaan pemikiran masyarakat di Kampung tersebut mencipta barangan dari tanah liat sebagai alat keperluan untuk tujuan fungsional, berteknologi sederhana dan praktikal serta memperlihatkan luahan ekspresi estetika. Kaedah kajian kualitatif ini berdasarkan kepada pendokumentasian dan kajian mendalam terhadap estetika tembikar tradisional Terenang. Kaedah kajian kes digunakan bagi mencapai objektif iaitu sumber pertama ialah dari data primer dimana data yang dikumpulkan melalui temubual atau wawancara terhadap responden. Manakala data yang kedua pula menggunakan kaedah permerhatian terhadap dokumen seperti jurnal-jurnal berwasit, audio visual, nota lapangan, gambar-gambar dan akhbar disebut sebagai data sekunder.
The Semiotics Aspect In The Dayak Motif Design: A Visual Communication Study Of Sign System, The Signification, And Application Among The Dayak Ethnic Groups In Borneo

This study investigates the semiotics aspect of the Dayak motifs in the visual communication system of the Dayak ethnics groups in Borneo. The aim is to examine the correlation between the theoretical and cultural meaning of the Dayak motif. The study will propose a conceptual model for interpreting and validating the semiological signification of the Dayak motif as a sign in visual communication. The significance of this study highlights the communicative role of Dayak motifs as the principal value in the creation of motifs overcoming the role of aesthetics as a complementary value in the visual presentation of a Dayak motif. This research employs a qualitative and a quantitative mixed-method approach to answer the research objectives. The qualitative research results were obtained by photographic observation and in-depth interview methods. The qualitative analysis aims to identify the authenticity of motif design characteristics and their original meaning. Four Dayak ethnic groups consisting of Iban, Apo Kayan or Orang Ulu, Ngaju, and Dayak Darat or Bidayuh, from four different geographical locations, were selected for analysis. The quantitative results were obtained by articulating the design elements and principles of the Dayak motif specimens collected from secondary data.
Consumers’ Perceived Risk And Perceived Benefit On Attitude And Intention To Re-Purchase From Food Truck Operators

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate consumers’ re-purchase intention towards food truck products based on their perceived risks and perceived benefits within the context of Malaysia. The food truck industry has been expanding recently as consumers have begun to explore alternatives for convenient food that is not only cheaper in value but also enables them to experience fun and pleasurable emotions, such as when purchasing food from a food truck. However, it is noted that there are several risks and concerns related to this industry, notably in terms of food safety and environmental risks. Considering that there are not many studies on this topic, particularly in Asian countries, this research aimed to look into this matter based on risk and benefit perceptions. This study adapted the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), where perceived risks (food safety risk and environmental risk) and perceived benefits (price value, convenience value, hedonic value) were introduced as independent variables. This study also investigated the mediating effect of consumer attitude on the relationship between perceived risks and benefits and re-purchase intention. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted through Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram on respondents with prior experience in the purchase of food truck products. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using the SmartPLS software was employed to analyse the data.
A Study Of Saudi Arabia’S Social Commentary Based On Photography Artworks

Photographers have their artistic creativity to express relevant social comments about the global social trend. In this respect, the current Saudi photographers have no exception. Compared to other developed countries, photography in Saudi Arabia has attracted little scientific and international attention. Therefore, this study seeks to unify communication by exploring the depiction of social commentary by Saudi photographers as they move to change the society. This study would determine the general perception of photographs produced by Saudi photographers. The artworks of Saudi artists from various art galleries in Saudi Arabia would be collected and analyzed by interviewing and distributing questionnaires to the public. This study utilized qualitative and quantitive methods to explore, interpret and analyze images. Feedback from the audience would be analyzed by NVivo and SPSS in order to identify recurring and emerging topics that the audience understands through social commentary images. Furthermore, this study would provide the communicative context for portraying social comments by Saudi photographers as an insight into the ideas, practices and attitudes of Saudi artists.

Formulation Of Visual Narrative Reading And Coding Approach Through Cultural Waterfront Portraiture Photographs Analysis

Present Visual Narratology almost exclusively encompass images in motion or sequential images despite some dialectics arguing the possibility of extending to single, still frame images. Inversely, present Visual Semiotics encompassing singular, still frame images share a proclivity for culturally-informed interpretations but do not constitute a Narratological perspective. Alongside these issues, the narrative-ability of single still frame images are also being contested. To address these gaps and inconsistencies, the study examines the possibility of a systematic narrativization from the reading of single, still-frame images. It performs its premise by formulating a systematic Visual Narrative Reading and Coding Approach constituting a simultaneous theoretical appropriation of Visual Narratology and Visual Semiotics deployed through a Qualitative Method Design with Visual Coding. Through this systematic approach, any projected narrative rhetoric output would be comprehensive and ethnographically informed of its key Protagonist’s World circumstances while simultaneously be grounded by evidential data deduced from the image’s visual signifiers. The Effectiveness Of Motion Graphic In Learning Chinese Character Stroke Order Through Cognitive Load Theory Assessment

This research aimed to investigate the effects of CCSOMG on students' learning performance and cognitive load. The Chinese character strokes are numerous and complex. Memorising the Chinese character stroke order is a major challenge for non-native language learners. To this end, this research developed and evaluated six CCSOMG for non-native language learners to remember the Chinese character stroke order. The six CCSOMG were developed by adopting the cognitive load theory as the important theoretical grounding and the ADDIE model as the instructional design framework and implemented in the language classes at the USM School of Languages, Literacies, and Translation. A proper experimental design was used to conduct this study. Forty participants were randomly divided into the experimental group (CCSOMG method, N=20) and the control group (traditional teaching method, N=20). Statistical analysis was performed on the learning performance of the two groups using independent samples T-test, and the results showed a significant difference in the scores for the two groups. The learning performance of the experimental group was better than that of the control group. Then the cognitive load of the two groups of students was measured with the subjective rating scale. Statistical analysis of the mental effort and material difficulty of the two groups using the Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference in scores between the two groups. The learners who used CCSOMG exerted much less mental effort and felt much less material difficulty than those who used the traditional method.
Multi-Sensory Factors In Consumer’s Product Packaging Barrier For The Elderly: A Case Study Of Chongzuo City, China

As the statistics indicates a high ageing population in China, barrier-free designs formulated for the elderly have been a concern in the design industry. Although encountering packaging barriers has been a common issue in the elderly’s daily life, studies that address this issue are insufficient. Notably, the significant features of the sensory packaging design can facilitate the elderly to use packaging without barriers. However, the collective research work on sensory factors in packaging design is limited to the marketing segment due to incomprehensive understanding. The purpose of this research is to evaluate how sensory factors in the packaging design solve packaging barriers for the elderly. In order to fulfil this purpose, this research first identified the packaging barriers encountered by the elderly and reasons that led to those obstacles; then analysed the assistant functions of sensory factors in the packaging designs based on the packaging barriers encountered by the elderly. This research employed qualitative research methods to conduct a case study in a typical ageing city of Chongzuo, China. According to the data retrieved from literatures, questionnaire surveys, as well as interview sessions with the elderly and experts, the following packaging barriers were identified: 1) barriers to product information identification, 2) barriers to knowing how to open the package, and 3) barriers to opening the package. In addition, detailed reasons that caused those packaging barriers were classified into the following categories: 1) the characteristics of the elderly and 2) the packaging features.

The research comprises the process of characters’ building within the actors of Teater Sebabak in auditorium of MATIC (Malaysia Tourist Information Centre). Teater Sebabak is a form of modem theatre performance in Malaysia which organized by Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Tourist Malaysia in the year of 1990 to 1995. Teater Sebabak has been programmed according to a few factors are the duration of script that no more than one and half hour, element of entertainment such as comedy, the most capable director and well known actors and actresses in Malaysia’s theatre performing arts. The character's building techniques of the actors and actresses in this Teater Sebabak has been studied base on their absorbation of the acting technique called The System’ in their performances. The System’ is a technique lead by Konstantin Stanislavski which comprises elements called ‘psycho-technique’. These elements consists of magic ‘if, given circumstances, imagination, attention, relaxation of muscles, pieces and problem, truth and belief, emotional memories and communication. These psycho-technique will results the creative quality of acting. Whilst, the aim of this research is to get an idea on how does the actors in Teater Sebabak absorb the elements of The System’ and to detect whether they indirectly apply The System’ without knowing the existence of the theory of The System’
Kajian Mengenai Nilai Estetika Pergerakan “Senaman Melayu Tua” Melalui Teknologi Motion Capture

Kajian ini memfokuskan nilai-nilai estetika dalam visual digital data yang divisualisasikan dari pergerakan “Senaman Melayu Tua” khususnya ‘Selangkah Guru’, ‘Anak Raja Turun ke Taman’ dan ‘Adab Sembah 9’. “Senaman Melayu Tua” merupakan pergerakan senaman tradisional Melayu terapeutik yang telah diiktiraf oleh Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia pada tahun 2011 sebagai Kaedah Rawatan Alternatif untuk kesejahteraan jasmani dan rohani. Pergerakan “Senaman Melayu Tua” khususnya ‘Selangkah Guru’, ‘Anak Raja Turun ke Taman’ dan ‘Adab Sembah 9’ mempersembahkan pergerakan berfalsafah yang unik mengenai keterampilan individual secara jasmani dan rohani. Tambahan pula, pengasas turut menyatakan bahawa pergerakan ini melukis sesuatu yang indah namun tidak dapat dilihat melalui penglihatan mata. Secara amnya, validasi terhadap visual estetika yang memberi manfaat terhadap kesejahteraan hanya dijustifikasi dari persepektif saintifik, dimana hanya membincangkan visual tersebut pada tahap macro semata-mata kerana visual tersebut berinspirasikani alam flora, fauna serta bentuk-bentuk yang organik. Ini jelas menunjukkan bahawa terdapat kejurangan antara bidang seni dan sains dalam memvalidasikan visual estetika dari pergerakan yang sejahtera secara makro dan mikro. Melihat kepada permasalahan yang diutarakan, kajian ini cuba untuk melihat keharmonian nilai estetika pergerakan “ Senaman Melayu Tua” yang katakan mampu memberi kesejahteraan dari jasmani dan rohani melalui pendekatan triangulasi teori.

Sistem keselamatan tali pinggang keledar (SKTPK) dalam pengangkutan awam adalah isu utama yang perlu ditangani. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidik faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penggunaan tali pinggang keledar dalam Bas Ekspres Antarabandar (BEAB) di Malaysia dan kesannya terhadap keselamatan penumpang. SKTPK telah terbukti berkesan dalam mengurangkan kecederaan dan kematian dalam kemalangan jalan raya.
Tarian Pinakang Etnik Kimaragang Di Sabah: Analisis Makna Dan Falsafah

Tarian Pinakang merupakan salah satu daripada tarian tradisional etnik Kimaragang yang banyak dipersembahkan di kawasan Daerah Kota Marudu, dan beberapa kawasan di Daerah Pitas, Sabah. Kajian ini bertujuan bagi mengenal pasti dan memahami fungsi tarian ini, serta mendalami makna dan falsafah yang terkandung di dalam persembahan tarian Pinakang. Walaupun tarian Pinakang masih popular dalam kalangan etnik Kimaragang sehingga kini, namun dari segi fungsi, makna dan falsafah hidup etnik Kimaragang yang terdapat didalam koreografi persembahan tarian Pinakang kurang dihayati generasi muda etnik Kimaragang pada masa kini. Perkara seumpama ini akan mengekang dan membantut perkembangan adat, budaya dan warisan tradisional etnik Kimaragang itu sendiri dan akan hanyut dibawa arus pemodenan dan anjakan paradigma yang semakin rakus. Merujuk kepada sorotan kajian kepustakaan yang telah dijalankan, kajian ilmiah dan penulisan akademik ke atas tarian Pinakang masih begitu kurang dan terhad. Kajian ini memberi tumpuan sepenuhnya keatas fungsi, makna dan falsafah hidup etnik Kimaragang yang tersulam indah di dalam ragam gerak, koreografi, kostum serta muzik tarian Pinakang itu sendiri. Hasil kajian seumpama ini boleh dijadikan rujukan kepada pengkaji akan datang, pengiat seni tari, jurulatih tarian tradisional serta generasi muda etnik Kimaragang di masa hadapan.
