- PublicationA Risk Assessment Model For The Implementation Of Digital Twin Technology In China’s Construction Industry Wang(2024-09)Wang, MaoyingThe Chinese construction industry has been criticized for its slow adoption of digitization, while Digital Twin (DT) technology is recognized as a potential solution. However, the implementation of DT comes with various risks, encompassing both opportunities and threats. Moreover, there is a notable gap in risk assessment specific to DT implementation within the Chinese construction sector. To fill this gap, this research is aiming at developing an effective risk assessment model (RAM) for evaluating associated risks, with the goal of enhancing the successful implementation of DT in construction. First, this research conducted a comprehensive literature review to identify potential risks associated with the practice of DT in the construction industry. Second, semi-structured interviews and the Fuzzy Delphi Method are carried out to refine the risks. Third, to better evaluate these risks, this research develops a General Cybernetic Best-Worst Method (G-Cy-BWM) RAM to identify and assess the significant risk factors (RFs) associated with the practice of DT within the construction sector. The multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods are adopted and a total of 36 qualified experts are involved in different phases of this research. As a result, a total of 32 critical RFs, including 23 opportunities and 9 threats, are identified and prioritized based on their interdependent weights calculated using the developed RAM.
- PublicationConservation Of Heritage Building Facade, The Case Study Of Traditional Tower Houses In Old Sana’a, Yemen(2024-09)Abdulhameed, Noran Abduljabbar MohammedOld Sana'a's traditional tower houses, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, face ongoing threats from unregulated alterations and modern construction practices. These changes have compromised the buildings' authenticity and cultural significance, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to heritage conservation. This study investigates the relationship between authenticity and conservation interventions in the context of tower house façade preservation. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research delves into three case studies of tower houses that have undergone recent alterations, supplemented by interviews with heritage conservation experts. Fundamental authentic values embedded in the façades, such as material choices, design elements, and their relationship to the urban fabric, are identified and analysed. The study examines the extent to which conservation interventions have impacted these authentic values and evaluates their effectiveness in preserving the cultural heritage of Old Sana'a. Challenges such as the absence of clear guidelines, limited institutional capacity, and a lack of public awareness are underscored. Based on these findings, the research proposes a comprehensive conservation guideline that prioritises the preservation of authenticity. This guideline emphasises using traditional materials and techniques, carefully assessing proposed interventions, and robust community engagement. These recommendations aim to inform policy development, guide conservation practice, and raise public awareness, ultimately contributing to the long-term safeguarding of Old Sana'a's unique architectural heritage.
- PublicationInternational Non-muslim Tourist Satisfaction With Islamic And Generic Destination Attributes In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia(2024-09)Basendwah, Mohammed Abdulrahman ASaudi Arabia has traditionally been a hub for religious tourism. With the introduction of the 2030 Vision, the country expands its tourism offering beyond religious tourism. This shift marks a strategic realignment to attract more diverse global travellers by implementing regulations designed to enhance the destination's appeal. Despite these ambitious reforms, there remains a critical gap in understanding the experience of tourists from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds when navigating conservative Islamic customs in a Muslim-majority country. Moreover, given that Saudi Arabia's tourism sector primarily focused on religious pilgrimages before the introduction of the leisure tourist visa in 2019, further research is needed on the satisfaction of international tourists visiting for non-religious activities. Literature shows that studies utilising the disconfirmation theory are scarce within the context of Islamic destination attributes. By utilising the disconfirmation theory, this study examines international non-Muslim tourists' satisfaction with Islamic destination attributes as well as the generic ones within the context of Jeddah city. Tourist satisfaction was assessed using the HOLSAT model, while the influence of Islamic and generic attributes on travel satisfaction was evaluated utilising the Expectancy Disconfirmation Model (EDM), with the aim to determine whether Islamic attributes hinder the success of the travel experience of non-Muslim tourists. Notably, the study's conceptual model, which is grounded in the EDM, was slightly modified to incorporate the loyalty variable.
- PublicationPhysical Living Environment-perceived Well-being Of Adolescent Occupants: A Post-occupancy Evaluation (Poe) On Juvenile Institutions In Malaysia(2024-09)Wong, Lai KeeThe United Nations (UN) recognises good health and well-being as among the criteria for Sustainable Development Goals, extending to all individuals, regardless of age and gender. However, adolescent occupants in juvenile institutions are often being overlooked, and their well-being in these facilities remains questionable. Sensitising this scenario, this thesis explores the link between the perceived well-being of building end-users and the design of physical living environment at 13 juvenile institutions located in the peninsular region of Malaysia. The research objectives are twofold: (1) to inspect the current physical living environment of juvenile institutions in Malaysia, and (2) to assess the perceived well-being and satisfaction of adolescent occupants residing in juvenile institutions in Malaysia in regard to their current physical living environment. This study employed multi-method research design conducted in the form of Post-occupancy Evaluation (POE) at 7 probation hostels (Asrama Akhlak – AA) and 6 approved schools (Sekolah Tunas Bakti – STB). Walkthrough observation and end-user survey were performed to assess the conditions of the physical living environment of the juvenile institutions and to gather the perceived well-being of adolescent occupants respectively. The survey responses were then analysed using descriptive statistics walkthrough observations result was used to cross-verify the survey responses. It is found that while the majority of the adolescent occupants reported positive or neutral well-being, there remains a substantial proportion (25.53%) who are dissatisfied with their physical living environments.
