Artistic Formation In Cultural Exchange At The Beginning Of The 20th Century: Analysis Of Oil Paintings By Four Artists From China

This study aims to explore the oil painting practices of Chinese artists who studied in France during the early 20th century, and seeks to offer new perspectives on contemporary cross-cultural artistic innovation. First, the research primarily employs Hippolyte Taine’s (1828–1893) “Three-Factor” Theory—comprising race, milieu, and epoch—as its main analytical framework to explore how the artists’ cultural origins and formative settings shaped their artistic styles and modes of expression. The study centres on four notable artists: Fang Junbi (1898–1986), Xu Beihong (1895–1953), Lin Fengmian (1900–1991), and Pan Yuliang (1895–1977), examining their life histories, academic experiences in France, and the ways their artistic ideals intersected and influenced one another.
