- PublicationA Corpus-Based Study Of Give, Take, And Make Light Verb Constructions In Mesolectal Malaysian English(2023-03)Christina Sook Beng, OngThis study investigated the structural and aspectual functional patterns of light verb constructions (LVCs) in mesolectal Malaysian English and identified nativised LVCs. LVCs refer to combinations of a semantically “empty” or light verb with a deverbal noun. The three selected light verbs are give, take, and make. A standard or prototypical LVC is made up of a light verb and a deverbal noun preceded by the indefinite article as shown in this sentence, I’ll take a look at her feet myself. Studies examining the use of LVCs in postcolonial Englishes suggest emerging variants such as make good decision may not be idiomatic and may not be acceptable by native speakers. To facilitate this research, a 100-million words general corpus of mesolectal Malaysian English was created. This corpus is known as the Corpus of Malaysian English Forum (CMEF). It consists of threads from Lowyat.NET, a popular Internet forum in Malaysia, representing the mesolectal variety of Malaysian English which is commonly used and nationally intelligible. The British National Corpus (BNC) was used as the reference corpus. The structural analysis reveals that Malaysian English LVCs do not deviate much from the standard structure of LVCs except the overuse of zero-article LVCs.

- PublicationA New Historicist Reading Of Islamization And Islamophobia In Selected Contemporary Pakistani Diasporic Fiction Malik(2022-06)Afzal, Malik HaroonLiterature and power-politics have a strong connection when it comes to literature’s role in promulgating and propagating a certain narrative which serves the interest of power. Past studies on contemporary Pakistani diasporic fictions tend to explore the themes of Islamization and Islamophobia in terms of their relation with power. There is a dearth of research that have investigated intensively the way the narratives of Islamization and Islamophobia were promulgated and propagated on the pretext of discursive formations, i.e., literary and non-literary. The present study unveils this role of discursive formations with reference to the selected contemporary Pakistani diasporic fiction: Muhammad Hanif’s A Case of Exploding Mangoes and Our Lady of Alice Bhatti, Hanif Kureishi’s The Black Album and My Son the Fanatic, Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Kamila Shamsie’s Home Fire. Since the Cold War, the narratives of Islamization and Islamophobia have been influencing the Muslims globally, especially in Pakistan due to its Islamization program during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The treatment of Muslim identity by the West in both pre and the post-Cold War eras reveals an interesting shift in the Western approach towards Muslims.

The British North Borneo Herald was published by The British North Borneo (Chartered) Company and circulated from 1883 until 1941. This study discussed the relationship between advertising, consumerism, and text production by utilising The British North Borneo Herald advertisements. The objectives of this research are to examine the meanings of the text in the selected colonial advertisements found in The British North Borneo Herald; to ascertain the ideology of consumerism in the selected colonial advertisements found in The British North Borneo Herald in a colonial environment, and to study the relationship between the ideology of consumerism and the production of text through Eagleton’s Materialist Criticism. Thirty-four advertisements, published between 1937-1941, were selected based on four criteria: the advertisements must have both visual and body copy; the advertisements were selected from the last five years of The British North Borneo Herald publication; the products advertised were originated from Britain and its allies, and the advertisements chosen promote essential and luxury products. Two types of analysis were utilised for this study: social semiotic analysis (Halliday’s Transitivity Model (2004) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design (1996/2006)) and Marxist analysis (Eagleton’s Materialist Criticism (1978)). Based on the semiotic analysis on 34 advertisements, there are three categories of needs and desires: health, lifestyle, and relationship.

- PublicationAnalisis Elemen Maslahah Dan Mafsadah Dalam Pelaksanaan Aktiviti Kokurikulum Di Sekolah-sekolah Menengah Terpilih Di Negeri Kedah(2022-04)Ahmad, Afnan Faiz RidzuanThe national curriculum consists of learning and teaching sessions in classrooms as well as co-curricular activities. The implementation of co-curricular activities aims to strengthen learning in the classroom and provide a variety of interesting experiences to students. However, there are several issues in the implementation of co-curricular activities in schools, in which the implementation of the activities is not in line with sharia and contradicts with maqasid al-shari'ah that causes accidents to occur and endanger the lives of students. Therefore, this study has been conducted to investigate the concept of maslahah and mafsadah on the side of syarak, review the drafting development and implementation of co-curricular activities in schools as well as identify the elements of maslahah and mafsadah in the implementation of selected co-curricular activities in schools. - PublicationAnalisis Sirah Nabi Saw Dalam Buku Teks Pendidikan Islam Tingkatan Satu Di Malaysia Berdasarkan Manhaj Al-muḥaddithīn(2024-09)Kadir, Fadzlan AbdVisual dialogue dataset, i.e. VisDial v1.0 includes a wide range of Microsoft Common Objects in Context (MSCOCO) image contents and collected questions via a crowdsourcing marketplace platform (i.e. Amazon Mechanical Turk). The use of existing question history and images no longer contributes to a better understanding of the image context as they do not cover the entire image semantic context. This research proposes the DsDial dataset, which is a context-aware visual dialogue that groups all relevant dialogue histories extracted based on their respective MSCOCO image categories. This research also exploits the overlapping visual context between images via adaptive relevant dialogue history selection during new dataset generation based on the groups of all relevant dialogue histories. It is half of 2.6 million question-answer pairs. Meanwhile, this research proposes Diverse History-Dialog (DS-Dialog) to resolve the missing visual semantic information for each image via context-aware visual attention. The context-aware visual attention includes the question-guided and relevant-dialoguehistory- guided visual attention modules to get the relevant visual context when both have achieved great confidence. The qualitative and quantitative experimental results on the VisDial v1.0 and DsDial datasets demonstrate that the proposed DS-Dialog not only outperforms the existing methods, but also achieves a competitive results by contributing to a better visual semantic extraction. DsDial dataset has proven its significance on LF model as compared to VisDal v1.0. Overall quantitative results show that DS-Dialog with DsDial dataset has achieved the best test scores for recall@1, recall@5, recall@10, mean rank, MRR, and NDCG respectively.

- PublicationFactors Affecting Farmers’ Participation In Participatory Irrigation Management In Tail-End Of The Uda Walawe Irrigation Scheme, Southern Sri Lanka(2022-12)Darshanie Sewwandika Yapa, Loku GamageParticipatory Irrigation Management (PIM) was introduced in the late 19th century as a type of irrigation reform for dealing with poor irrigation system performance in many agricultural areas of the world, including Sri Lanka. However, the emergence of head-tail disparity along the canal network has frequently resulted in inefficiency in irrigation management, causing this issue to become a subject of heated debate among scholars. Although some scholars have pointed out that an appropriate level of farmers’ participation is difficult to bring about at the tail-end of many irrigation schemes in Sri Lanka, no one has pinpointed the factors influencing the tailend farmers’ participation in PIM. Therefore, the objectives of the study are to assess the non-spatial, spatial, and overall factors that significantly affect tail-end farmers’ participation in PIM. The study was conducted at the tail-end of the Uda Walawe irrigation scheme, which remains as one of the perpetually water deficit schemes in Sri Lanka. Data were collected from 482 irrigated plots of cultivators by conducting a questionnaire survey, field observations and informal discussion. Apart from that, key informant interviews and focus group discussion were held with Irrigation Agency officers and farmer organization leaders to collect supplementary data and information related to the study. QGIS 3.16.6 and SPSS ver. 20.0 were used for digitizing, calculating, and analysing the collected data. The study revealed that 59% of the total number of farmers at the tail-end of the scheme actively engaged in collective action while 41% were inactive in PIM.

- PublicationFactors Influencing The Roles Of Environmental Ngos In The Bargaining Of P-xylene And Water Issues In Yunnan, China(2023-09)Jiao, YijuanEnvironmental non-governmental organisations (ENGOs) have an increasingly significant influence on the environmental governance process through various awareness and negotiation activities, but there is still a lack of a comprehensive understanding of their involvement in environmental bargaining (EB). This study aims to investigate the role of ENGOs in EB and the influencing factors of their role by combining EB and stakeholder theories. A mixed-methods research design involving an in-depth questionnaire survey, a semi-structured interview, document review, and participant observation was used to gain a more complete picture of the research context. A structural equation model of ENGOs' participation in EB was constructed to compare the role of ENGOs in the negotiation of the "Kunming PX Event" and the "Nujiang Water Event" in Yunnan, China. The results show that complex powers and interests play a crucial role during EB. The relationship network, media, and human resources are among the most significant factors influencing the role of ENGOs out of all the other factors such as funding, openness, knowledge, scale, and experience. The strength of ENGOs’ relationship networks is critical to solving environmental problems. In order for the roles of ENGOs to be effective in the EB process, they need to be placed in the right context in the negotiation process. It is necessary to establish efficient public participation platforms and processes for effective EB.
