Adaptation Experience Of Overseas Chinese Studyingin Guangxi Province Through ‘Chineseness’ Perspective In Higher Education Institutions
    (2024-06)
    Li, Ying
Global student mobility in higher education has witnessed an emerging reverse trend as students flow back to their ancestral homeland country. Yet, the influences of this similar ancestral background on their reverse education experience remain to be addressed. Likewise, an increasing number of overseas chinese students are choosing to study in china rather than in traditional western destinations. At the same time, it is still underdetermined whether their shared chineseness roots and origins can provide them with a smooth adaptation experience in china. Given that the adaptation of international students studying in china’s higher education institutions from similar backgrounds and origins is under-explored, what influence of cultural similarity on adaptation in china is still to be resolved. Thus, this study sets out to investigate the adaptation experience of overseas chinese studying in china’s universities with a focus on their chineseness background. Specifically, it is designed to examine how their ethnic chinese background, namely chineseness, interplayed with their adaptation experience in china. This study has employed a qualitative research approach and case study method through semi-structured interviews with 20 southeast asian (sea) overseas chinese studying in china.

    Hao, Moo Keng
There numerous of study about employability has been conducted by researchers from different discipline previously. However, the research that conducted did not touch on all four stakeholders that this study looks into. Beside that, the unemployment rate of Malaysia is having the trend of increase yearly, and effort that taken are not uniform. Therefore, this study explored the concept of employability by unpacking this from the perspectives of policymakers, university administrators, employers and undergraduates. Policymakers, university administrators representatives, employer representatives and undergraduate representatives were recruited as participants in this study. These respondents were selected because they are the ones who produce the direct impact and direct beneficiary of employability. Data for policymakers was collected through the policymaker who is from the Ministry of Higher Education, whereas the university representatives are from a public research university in Penang and an international college in Penang. While for employers, the chosen employers' representatives are those who are involved directly in the recruitment process of that particular company. Lastly, student representatives are the students who are still studying at the public research university and the international college in Penang. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews as instruments. Results showed that employability is a process, and it has four characteristics which are job suitability, ability to be employed, readiness of employment and job sustainability. The study also found that employability skill can be interpreted in both the short-run and long-run. Skill-based employability and knowledge-based employability primarily contribute to short-term employability, while competence-based employability and capability-based employability, along with the other two employability types, contribute to long-term employability for graduates.

    (2022-09)
    Muniandy, Jayanthi
Edmodo, a social learning network site has been acknowledged for its potential in enhancing learners’ language skills and online discussions. Nevertheless, studies on the intention to use Edmodo as a platform for a virtual learning community among ESP learners are still in dearth. The concept of a virtual learning community has emerged as an avenue to unite learners through an online learning platform although they are separated by physical distance. In the field of technology acceptance in education, studies have measured the acceptance of Edmodo through technology acceptance factors but have neglected the educational factors. Therefore, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) that consists of technology acceptance factors such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating condition was expanded by incorporating an educational factor, namely virtual community of practice (VCoP) to determine factors influencing ESP learners’ behavioural intention in using Edmodo as a platform for a virtual learning community. In addition, ESP learners’ individual differences such as gender, fields of study, and proficiency level were integrated as the moderating effects. The study was carried out by disseminating a questionnaire survey to 200 ESP learners and conducting focus group interviews with 16 learners
