Abstract
In industrial automation, motion control system is a very crucial part to control the physical motion of a specific mechanical module in a machine. Most of the motion control systems nowadays use servo motor as a feedback driving actuator. However, due to its higher maintenance and cost, stepper motor has been used to replace the servo motor. Thus, a closed-loop motion control system for stepper motor is presented in this dissertation. The system consists of stepper motor, feedback system, microcontroller and mechanical module. The system uses a closed-loop control in the microcontroller with automatic position correction algorithm. The feedback system which is consists of an incremental encoder and a codewheel will feedback positioning information signals to the microcontroller. A graphical user interface is developed to ease the communication between the user and the system. The system is implemented wherein a number of inputs are provided into a graphical user interface and the mechanical module is automatically driven to its desired conditions. A number of experiments are carried out to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of the system. The experimental results demonstrate that the motion control system developed is promising.
