- PublicationA Study On The Design And Use Of Performance Management System In China’s Innovative Start-ups(2023-08)Hung, Wai Chung ClarenceChina’s start-ups market has grown rapidly since the Chinese Government encouraged new ventures and announced the “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” initiative in 2015. Nevertheless, start-ups’ failure rate can be as high as 95%, partly due to the lack of Performance Management Systems (PMSs) in managing and controlling organisations. PMSs are designed based on Western, well-established organisations. Existing research relating to PMSs in China, concerning their design and use in innovative start-ups, is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the types of PMSs adopted in China’s innovative start-ups, and how the systems are designed and used under the influence of Chinese culture and start-up managers’ personality traits. This study adopted a qualitative case study approach for four selected start-up companies, with data collected through the use of semi-structured interviews, field observations and document reviews to examine their management control behaviours. One of the four case companies was purposely selected as a contrasting case for identifying the similarities and differences among case ownermanagers in order to uncover the underlying influence of their behaviours. The GLOBE theory, the Traits Theory of Personality, and the Theory of Circumscription and Compromise were used to underpin the findings and discussions. The findings revealed that the Chinese owner-managers used simplified and informal PMSs, through personnel and social controls, in their organisations

- PublicationAn Antecedent-Outcome Model Of Responsible Innovation: A Resource-Based Perspective(2023-07)Rasheed, Memon KhalidFirms are not built in an isolated world, nor can they survive without societal acceptance. Firms are responsible for their actions and innovations, even if those innovations are meant to be "social innovations." Increased awareness of economic and non-economic stakeholders has forced firms to seek social and ethical acceptability to be considered socially and cognitively desirable. It’s no longer about gaining profits only. Firms now need to address the rising concerns regarding upcoming technological innovations, especially artificially intelligent machines. Such technological innovations have serious impacts on human autonomy, fairness, justice, and agency. Collective and responsible stewardship based on some values and principles, through public engagement and informed discourse, may resolve such issues. The research proposes "responsible innovation" (RI) as the solution to all these problems. RI is a novel approach for managing technological innovations that makes the firm ethically, morally, and socially responsible, environmentally friendly, and humanitarian in addition to being business-oriented.

- PublicationAsymmetric Effects Of Oil Prices And Exchange Rates On Sectoral Stock Indices In South Asian Countries(2024-06)Asim, MuhammadGlobalization has grown but at accelerating uncertainties. Therefore, contagion and spillover effects among financial markets have become the center of research in finance in the past decades. Most of the past studies on stock market mainly consisted of two streams first one is the impact studies on stocks and another one is spillover studies. Existing impact studies mainly examine the relationship between stocks and key factors such as oil price and exchange rate but do not account for asymmetric effects and sectoral effects. These studies utilize aggregate index which normally suffers from aggregation bias. Secondly, apart from that, numerous studies that assess the financial shock transmissions mainly focus on developed nations but less attention was given to the emerging south asian region. So far, to the best knowledge of the author, none of the previous studies measure directional spillover at the sectoral level for south asian countries. Taking note of the issues mentioned, the present study is designed into two parts. First part of this study evaluates asymmetric impacts of both up-down movements in oil prices and exchange rates on sectorial stock prices of india, pakistan, and sri lanka (ips). For this purpose, this study adopts the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (nardl) given by shin et al. (2014). Second, this study examines the connectedness among the oil, forex, and sectoral stock returns of ips. The spillover index framework given by diebold and yilmaz (2012) and barunik and krehlik (2018) are used for respective time-domain and frequency-domain spillover analysis.

As jordan is a developing nation striving to attract investments and open up to the world, this study investigates the factors influencing the level of earnings quality, particularly after reviewing previous literature indicating a decline in earnings quality in jordan. The study adopts a research model that aligns with the agency and resource independence theories aimed at bridging the gap and elucidating the contrasting findings of previous literature by examining the roles of both the board of directors and the audit committee characteristics, as outlined in the last modification of the jordanian corporate governance code in 2017. - PublicationDesign And Implementation Of Embedded Active Rfid System With Strain Sensor(2014-08)Omar, Muhammad QayumConventionally, machine condition monitoring is applied in the industry, using the wired system for monitoring the machine condition. This method can cause expensive cable installation, difficult replacement, workspace limitation and manual data collection for maintenance. Therefore, it is appropriate to develop an active RFID system as a solution. The work presented in this thesis contributes to the research of the 2.4 GHz active RFID system with strain sensor integration in several ways such as the design and embedment of the RFID tag that consists of the strain sensor, microcontroller and RF transceiver module; the implementation of the RFID tag that transmits information data, wireless, to the RFID reader for data monitoring and storage; and the performance evaluation of the active RFID system in various aspects including calibration based on wireless and wired prototypes , operating frequency verification, periodic transmission accuracy, maximum read range measurement at indoor and outdoor environments and estimation of power consumption of the tag. It is observed that the strain data reading, through wired and wireless transmission from the proposed RFID system provide an acceptable, stable and less error strain reading values.
